WORKSHOP
From Dirty Rags to Rich Soil (AKA Worms Eat My
Clothes)
Daniel Tainow
Queens Botanical Gardens
NYC Compost
With the help of red wiggler worms, Daniel will demonstrate
how to recycle cotton and wool clothing scraps (along with newspaper,
hair, dryer lint, and kitchen scraps) into vermicompost. Vermicompost
is a rich soil amendment that you can use in your garden and on house
plants.
Daniel is the Compost Instructor at the Queens Botanical Garden.
He has been an environmental educator since 1999. He learned the way of
the worm while at Humboldt State University in Arcata, CA and
currently keeps compost in Alphabet City.
Queens Botanical Garden is located in Flushing, close to
the end of the 7 subway line. Their vision is to be the botanical garden
noted for presentation of plants as unique expressions of cultural
traditions, and mission is to ... demonstrate environmental
stewardship, promote sustainability and celebrate the rich cultural
connections between people and plants. The Department of Sanitation
has funded compost education projects at the City's four Botanical
Gardens since 1993.
