jess feury relocated to the bay area from washington, dc, in spring 05. back east, jess worked as an art therapist counseling families impacted by the HIV virus. during her time in dc, jess also founded a grassroots art collective, the b side, featuring local experimental artists and musicians, housed in the basement of an independent record shop. jess maintained an active role in the arts community through her paintings and her clothing designs, which she began selling at east coast shops in brooklyn, DC, and philadelphia.
seeing and inspired by the thriving and supportive arts community in the east bay, jess took the plunge and opened a handmade/vintage clothing/art gallery of her own, drawing from her experiences with working with others and being an artist, herself. hobbyhorse features local and national designers, along with feury's own clothing line, magpie. in the back gallery, monthly group shows are curated along with musical performances, craft nights, and workshops. jess dreams about integrated her art therapiy experience with her business, to eventually offer small art therapy groups for both children and adults in the back gallery.
hobbyhorse mission
hobbyhorse was born out of jess feury's life-long obsession with all things handcrafted and the sentimentality of items lived in by others in another time, in another place. the magic began as a girl sifting through her grandmother's drawers laced with carved cameos and '60s needlepoint's, in combination with her own exploration as an artist, which culminated in the joint effort of her playful creations and her favorite pastime, playing dress up. and thus, feury's clothing line, magpie was hatched. simultaneously, feury founded and directed the b-side art collective, in washington, d.c., showcasing local artists and musicians in the basement of a record shop.
hobbyhorse strives to integrate local handmade clothing with a special emphasis on vintage clothing from the '60s and '70s, reflected in her own use of fabric and patterns from this era. as the perfect complement to jess' experience and interests, hobbyhorse has a separate 'back gallery,' which will host bi-monthly art exhibits for local artists.
hobbyhorse envisions a community-based model, where craft nights, artist-taught workshops, and art shows thrive. jess has spent the last 8 years as an art teacher and art therapist and plans to bring these experiences into practice in the form of small art groups in her back gallery space. hobbyhorse will also begin featuring a designer of the month wherein each local designer will have a trunk show. designers will work on their wares while the public is invited to interact with the artists in order to create a greater appreciation for the goods purchased and a connection to the maker. hobbyhorse supports local artists and designers who personally design and craft their clothing versus the mass production and commercialism of other clothing businesses.
